Emergency Egress Light Inspection Rules
Commercial facilities must comply with strict testing protocols for all battery-powered exit signs and emergency lights:
- Monthly 30-Second Test: A brief functional test using the integrated check button to ensure the battery powers the bulb.
- Annual 90-Minute Test: A full discharge test simulating a complete power failure, proving the system can maintain code-compliant illumination (minimum 1 foot-candle along egress path) for 90 minutes.
Exit Sign Visibility & Placement Codes
Exit signs must remain continuously illuminated (via internal bulbs or constant power). They must be positioned at all exit doors, corridor junctions, and egress path direction changes. Letters on the sign must be highly visible (minimum 6 inches tall) with contrasting backdrops.
