In a standard plumbing system, water is designed to flow in one direction—from the public main supply lines into your property's pipes and out of your taps. However, shifts in water pressure can cause the direction of the flow to reverse. When this happens, it is known as **backflow**.

Any property—commercial or residential—with a dedicated lawn sprinkler or drip irrigation system must have a backflow preventer (usually a Pressure Vacuum Breaker, or PVB). Because sprinkler heads sit on the ground, lawn fertilizers, pet waste, pesticides, and stagnant water can collect in the pipes and siphon back into your home or business drinking lines during a pressure drop.
Apartment complexes, condominiums, and townhome communities typically share service lines. If the property has auxiliary water lines, swimming pools, or hydronic heating systems, municipal codes mandate annual testing to protect all residents sharing the master meter.
Commercial fire sprinkler systems contain water that sits stagnant in iron pipes for months or years. This water accumulates rust, heavy metals, and bacteria. A backflow assembly is required at the water service entry point to prevent this toxic mix from feeding back into public drinking water lines.
Backflow prevention assemblies are mechanical devices. They contain internal rubber seals, check valves, springs, and relief ports that are subject to constant wear and tear, pressure fluctuations, and water minerals. Over time, these parts degrade, which is why annual testing is strictly enforced.
During a backflow test, a certified technician connects a specialized differential pressure test kit to the test cocks on the assembly. The water supply is temporarily shut off for 10–15 minutes while the technician checks that check valves seal tightly and relief valves open at the correct pressure thresholds.
Once the test is complete, the results are recorded on an official municipal form and submitted to the water authority (such as ABCWUA). If the device fails, it must be repaired immediately with new seals or springs, retested, and certified compliant.
